On April 22, 1970, more than 20 million Americans participated in this event that has evolved into Earth Day. The incredible turnout sparked an environmental movement that led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
